Danger Warning: US spec Sewing Machines Being Sold in the UK
We are receiving an increasing number of calls and messages from customers whose new sewing machines run dangerously fast, cannot be controlled by the foot pedal, or have failed shortly after first use. In nearly every case, the customer has bought a US-specification 110V machine from an online marketplace such as Amazon, and is running it on UK 240V mains.
This seems to be happening with little knowledge to the customer until the machine arrives with the incorrect plug on.
This page explains why this is happening, what the real risks are, and how to make sure the machine you buy is genuine UK specification.
What Is Happening
The UK mains supply runs at 220-240 volts. The US mains supply runs at 110-120 volts. A sewing machine built for the US market is designed, wired, and certified for 110V only.
When a 110V machine is plugged into UK 240V power, either directly via a plug adapter or by changing the plug, every electrical component inside is being fed roughly double the voltage it was designed for. The motor runs at roughly double its design speed. The internal electronics receive roughly four times the power they were built to handle.
The first thing customers notice is that the machine runs at full speed with little or no control from the foot pedal. This is not a fault with the machine. It is the machine being provided too much voltage/power.
The Real Risks
Running a 110V machine on UK 240V mains is not just a performance issue. It creates genuine safety hazards:
- Fire risk. The motor windings, internal circuit board, and US-specification mains lead are all under-rated for UK voltage. Components overheat, capacitors can swell or rupture, and the machine, lead, or plug adapter can catch fire.
- Runaway motor. The foot pedal's electronic speed controller can fail in a closed position, meaning the needle continues at full speed regardless of pedal input. The only way to stop the machine is to unplug it. This is a serious injury risk,
- Electric shock. Heat damage to internal insulation can leave the metal body of the machine live. UK-specification machines are built with UK-compliant double insulation. US-specification machines used on UK mains lose that protection as they degrade.
- No UK fuse protection. UK plugs contain a cartridge fuse sized to protect the appliance lead. US plugs do not and travel adapters may not. There can be no last line of defence if something goes wrong.
- Home insurance risk. A fire caused by a non-UK-compliant electrical appliance may not be covered by your home insurance, because the appliance does not meet UK safety regulations.
These Machines Are Not Legal for UK Sale
All electrical appliances sold for use in the UK must comply with the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and carry UKCA or CE marking. A US-specification 110V machine sold into the UK market does not meet these requirements. It has not been certified for UK use, does not carry a UK plug, and is not covered by Singer's UK warranty network.
No UK Warranty or Support
Machines bought from international sellers or imported via marketplaces are not supplied through Singer's official UK distribution channel. This means:
- No UK manufacturer warranty
- No access to Singer UK's authorised service network
- Replacement parts are difficult or impossible to source in the UK
- Singer UK is not responsible for the machine
Most customers only discover this after a fault develops, at which point they have no route to repair or replacement.
How to Spot a US-Specification Machine Before You Buy
- The price is significantly below UK retailers, often by 30-50%
- The listing mentions shipping from the United States, or the seller is US-based
- The product images show a US-style two-pin plug
- The voltage is listed as 110V, 120V, or "110-120V"
- The listing mentions a "UK plug adapter included" rather than a genuine UK plug and lead
- The model number does not match the UK Singer range on singer.co.uk
If any of these apply, the machine is not a UK-specification model regardless of what the listing claims.
